If you have read about AI agents recently, you have probably seen "MCP". Here is what it means and why it matters for businesses.
The problem MCP solves
An AI model on its own only knows what was in its training data and what you paste into the chat. To be useful at work, it needs to read your data (orders, tickets, documents) and take actions (create a task, send an invoice).
Before MCP, every AI product had its own way of connecting to tools. If you wanted your CRM available in three different AI assistants, you built three integrations.
What MCP is
The Model Context Protocol is an open standard, introduced by Anthropic in late 2024, that defines one common way for AI applications to talk to external systems. It has two sides:
- MCP servers expose tools and data: "search orders", "get customer", "create ticket".
- MCP clients are AI applications that connect to those servers and let the model use them.
Think of it like USB for AI: build the connector once, plug it into any compatible client.
What an MCP server can offer
- Tools: actions the model can call, with defined inputs.
- Resources: data the model can read, such as files or records.
- Prompts: reusable templates for common tasks.
Practical business examples
- An internal MCP server for your Laravel back office, so staff can ask "which orders are late this week?" in plain language.
- A social media agent where users bring their own AI model and the platform exposes posting and analytics tools through MCP.
- A support assistant that can look up orders and draft replies, but needs approval to issue refunds.
Security still matters
MCP standardizes the connection; it does not decide what is safe. When I build MCP servers I:
- Expose the smallest set of tools needed.
- Separate read tools from write tools.
- Require approval for anything involving money or deletion.
- Authenticate every connection and log every call.
Should you care?
If you plan to use AI with your own systems, yes. Building an MCP server for your product means you are not locked into one AI vendor, and new AI clients can use your tools without extra work.
