I recently set up a Shopify store for an electronics retailer in Dubai, starting from a spreadsheet of 341 products. I have also connected six Shopify stores to a custom platform for another client. This is the checklist that keeps these projects calm.
1. Clean the catalog first
Most import problems are spreadsheet problems. Before anything goes into Shopify:
- One row per variant, with a shared handle for the product.
- Consistent brand names ("Samsung", not "SAMSUNG" and "samsung").
- Option names standardized:
Color,Storage,Size. - Prices, compare-at prices and SKUs filled in.
- Image URLs checked; broken links stop imports.
I usually generate the final Shopify CSV with a script, which makes re-runs painless.
2. Plan collections around how people shop
Electronics customers browse by category, brand and need. A structure that works:
- Parent categories: Phones, Laptops, Audio, Accessories.
- Sub-categories: Earbuds, Headphones, Speakers.
- Brand collections: Apple, Samsung, Anker.
- Merchandising collections: New arrivals, Best sellers, Deals.
Use automated collections with tag or vendor rules where possible so new products land in the right place automatically.
3. Import in batches
Import ten products first and check them on the storefront. Then import the rest. Keep the CSV in version control so you know exactly what was imported.
4. Build navigation that scales
With hundreds of products, a mega menu helps customers reach the right collection in two clicks. Group by category with brand shortcuts, and keep the mobile menu simple.
5. SEO basics
- Unique title and meta description for every collection.
- A short, helpful collection description above or below the grid.
- Product titles that include brand and model.
- Image alt text describing the product.
- Clean URL handles without random numbers.
6. Integrations
Common ones: payment gateways for the region, shipping apps, reviews, WhatsApp chat and analytics. For custom needs, the Shopify Admin API lets your own platform sync products, orders and customers.
7. Pre-launch checks
- Place real test orders on a phone, with each payment method.
- Check taxes and shipping rates for each region.
- Check the footer, policies and contact page.
- Set up redirects if you are moving from another platform.
